If you are able to see a doctor and can afford it, they can take a blood sample to check your thyroid hormone levels. They can also do a physical exam to check your thyroid area for goiter or any unusual lumps.

I just recently had my thyroid checked to rule out a thyroid disease (turns out I just have really crazy anxiety that causes severe chest pain that keeps me awake at night -- thyroid disease would've probably been easier to treat). I was all freaked out because my mom was like "oh yeah your great uncle died of thyroid cancer I forgot to tell you" right before I got tested. But most people don't get their thyroid checked, and symptoms of thyroid disease often go unnoticed or are attributed to other things (stuff like irritable mood, nervousness, sudden weight loss or weight gain, etc.)

ETA: Your lymph nodes in the neck and thyroid are in completely different places. Your thyroid is located right on front of your trachea, on your adam's apple area. Lymph nodes are on the side of the neck.
