My headcanon is that they got together at the end of the show, then realized they didn't really know what to do or where to go with that relationship, wind up splitting up and doing their own things and/or just being friends for a while, and then becoming romantically involved in their late teens or twenties for real this time. I openly would have preferred Zutara, but if that's how Kataang's relationship really went, I could totally get on board with it.
