In a small conservative English village, and I work as an office manager in comfy baggy clothes. When you remove the connotations of the costume, though, it's entirely covered up except for most of the arms and some cleavage. You really do see worse on the street every day. And as for cons, well, the proliferation of Yoko cosplayers shows that this isn't that undignified or flashy. I love Yoko's character, but her costume really does show a lot of skin.

I'm still not sure "dignified" is the word I'd choose, considering you really can't remove the connotations of bunny ears and tail, but alright then.

Probably helps that the Playboy image seems to have had very little widespread cultural penetration around here. People are certainly aware of the costume, but the connotations have never seemed to be wholly frowned upon, or slated for being too slutty. Hefner gets no airtime or anything, and probably plenty of people who are aware of the look couldn't name Hefner, or perhaps even the brand.

How does an outfit that's high-cut around the legs, low-cut and strapless body-tight suit correlate with "dignified"? I'm confused. Because it doesn't matter what you wear when you go to work, people at large don't know or don't care. And if someone comes up with the highly similar Playboy bunny image you're shocked? Seriously, would you wear this costume in a professional setting? No? Then it doesn't qualify as "dignified". Dignified is something you could wear to tea with the Queen. Most of my cosplays don't qualify as dignified. I think many of them would qualify as being "conservative" in that all the bathing-suit bits are covered and I'm not in full-on spandex. I might even describe them as having full-coverage.

Also, having been to many a con, you somehow think the anime crowd is supposed to be better about social niceties and higher standards for social cues? Really?

I fully agree you ought to be unmolested, and have the right to express displeasure over inappropriate contact/comments. BUT. Cosplay is more than costuming and people that truly cosplay are supposed to be (somewhat) in character. So if you go looking for a Playboy bunny (to most), they may assume you're in THAT character. I think if you're going in that outfit, you ought to be prepared for some of that.
