I think there's a big enough difference both ways, but part of it is that Katara acts older than her age, and by the season 3, looks like she's sixteen or seventeen, and Aang really still only looks twelve, maybe thirteen.

I prefer Mai and Zuko (and don't really like any of Katara's options), but I do admit I don't really like how Aang and Katara ended up. It did sort of ring of "main hero must have main girl!". I think it would have been better as a less explicit ending. Just the hint of it could have worked, and then canonized later in Korra.

I agree with your whole post, but this most of all. Like, it really weirds me out that they were officially "together" when he was only 12 damn years old, and Katara was also only 14. I would have preferred it to be ambiguous at the end, that was I could pretend that they actually physically "got together" when they were older (or at least after Aang had slogged through puberty...)

Really? I don't think Katara looks 16/17 at all... I honestly thought she still looked 14...
