I think it's a bit childish to think of these characters as eternally sixteen. At the end of the books, they are almost forty. And some of the best fanfiction out there is about characters like McGonagall or Snape, or Moody or Charlie Weasley, and they are all very much 'of age.'

People grow up. If you take a character seriously, you have to seriously consider that character as aging and maturing, just like you will one day. There are plenty of fanfics out there about underage kids. They are dreadful. There are plenty of fanfics out there where characters grow up, stay true to their canon personality and engage in exciting, well-written adventures and OMG there might be sex in them because, hello, people have sex.

Hit the backspace key or get out of the fandom, but don't act like HP fanfiction has gone to the dogs just because Harry gets his old feller out every once in awhile.
