Mad Men S1
Peggy Olsen got knocked up by Pete Campbell and at the end of the season she has a baby and gives it away (thought isn't her sister raising him? He appears in later episodes so I don't think he was given up for adoption?)

The weirdest thing about it is how she just totally ignored her own pregnancy and when she starts going into labor (at work!) she's like "oh I have a really bad stomachache" and ends up going to the doctor and the nurse is the one to tell her she's having a baby. Then she doesn't even want to look at it afterwards. I still don't get what that was all about. Was she just in deep denial or did she really have no idea she was even pregnant? How could someone be so sheltered that they don't even know what pregnancy is and how that works?

That scene where she doesn't even want to look at the baby is one of the most heart-breaking things I've ever seen on tv. I mean, Peggy shouldn't have to raise a child but at the same time the thought of an unwanted, unloved child is just one of the worst things I can imagine

It's actually a different baby; when they show Peggy in the hospital in flashback in S2, Anita (her sister) is shown to be pregnant. So she gave birth a little bit after and the baby we see Peggy avoiding is her nephew. Her child was given up for adoption.

Pfft now I feel completely stupid.
Well, for what it's worth, I only watched each episode once.

Don't feel stupid! The creator guy said it was meant to be misleading in an interview some time after the episode. I was pretty confused too, until I read that. It's still interesting to see how she acts around children, though.

It happens. I knew a grl who was in denial up till 7 months of pregnancy.

I always assumed the not looking at him was to avoid bonding with the baby.

Plus there's that whole "I Didn't Know I was Pregnant!" show. Apparently it's pretty common to not show at all/have no fucking clue. Which, man, was a horrible thing to be unprepared for.

LOL that show has me so scared I could be pregnant at any time. Regardless of the fact that I stay the same weight and have regular menstrual cycles. It got even worse when I read that you can still bleed while pregnant. WTF

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Right. I go like pseudo-pregnancy symptoms after taking Plan B once and I was freaking out I might have ended up pregnant anyway. It's like my wort nightmare. What surprises me in what little I've seen of that show, the women tend to keep the kid/even be excited about it. It's pretty much be: "get that thing the hell away from me!"
