My son is 12, too, but more into playing games than reading fic. My 10 year old daughter, now, I can see her getting into fandom. I think, if it ever comes up, I'll teach them both how to use the backarrow button, and trust them not to read things that bore or bother them. Eventually, they are going to see icky things, because trolls/tastes/assholes. I'll support them if they are naturally upset, but I'd rather them shrug it off because I shrug it off, than get freaked out because I'm freaked out.
