I may not be a mother, but I've been in fandom for eight years, and I discovered that my youngest sister (who is 13) *isn't* reading gen!fanfiction. Having "the talk" is no fun, but when you're on the internet, you can get a hold of anything, and fandom is not the best place to be "learning" (I'll use this term loosely) about a variety of topics.

I hate to say it, but monitor what your son reads. He's young and significantly vulnerable to what fandom can expose him to, and just as you wouldn't let him see an adult-rated movie or play and adult-rated game, you wouldn't let him view adult-rated material just because it's on the web. Sure, he'll get to the age where he's mature enough to read and understand the material, but take each step as it comes.

Just by showing him the best places to find fanfiction is taking an interest in what he does, and letting him know that he can talk to you about certain content on there can make a huge difference for the later stuff.
