Speaking up as a K/S shipper (I'm the OP that pointed out the hasty generalizations in the wanky thread of week yonder). Do I believe that our culture has become progressive enough to accept iconic characters such as Kirk and Spock being in a romantic relationship... no. I find it sad, immensely so, but realistically we're not quite there yet as a society. Not even in a community, such as Star Trek, whose underlying theme has always been tolerance.

Exhibits (warning: the homophobia exhibited in these threads is sick and disturbing):

So to answer your question specifically, not ALL K/S shippers believe it will happen (though do occasionally embrace wishful thinking... everyone in fandom does, that is why there is fandom ;)) but there is a small sect that do *shrugs*.

Would I like to see it? Absolutely. But I am very much aware that somewhere lurking in the shadows "A Million Moms" or whatever they call themselves would protest it adamantly and Paramount is undoubtedly aware of that. Thankfully, this is what fandom and fanfiction is for, to make desires a reality when canon can't (or won't).

And before anyone jumps all over me due to last weeks wank, I don't and wouldn't call those who don't want to see K/S because the pairing is not their particular cuppa homophobic. I'd call you homophobic if the reasons you don't want to see them together uses very specific terminology (examples of that in the first link above - the word 'unnatural' being at the top of that list). And, personally, speaking for me, I'd be happy to see ANY gay or lesbian character in Star Trek. I think its long overdue. Doesn't matter if its Kirk/Spock or Andy the Andorian/Tim the Tribble.

To clarify: as a K/S shipper do I believe anyone who doesn't ship my ship along with me is homophobic? No, I certainly do not. Shipping is a matter of personal taste, sometimes you see it, sometimes you don't. Do I believe homophobia exists within Trek fandom. Yes, I've seen it.

Believe it or not (and I get the distinct impression on this site that few do) not all K/S fans are a) out in full force in search for wank to engage in or b) believing we somehow have control over what goes in the movie script. Some of us ship K/S because we think Kirk is awesome, we think Spock is awesome and that together they're amazing (and hot). :)

K/S shippers use the homophobic argument against the haters because they believe that K/S is really a canon gay couple so if you refuse to acknowledge them as such you're called homophobic.
But the thing is K/S don't have a gay relationship and if people want to see them as brothers and friends they're entitled to do so as it's pretty much how canon itself actually developed them.
Do K/S fans ever take in consideration the thought that the reboot writers may just genuinely love them as friends and if they don't make them a couple it isn't because of some hidden agenda but because they weren't a couple in the original show?
We're asking them to chance the sexual orientation of characters that someone else had created.

Calling people homophobic because they don't like a nonexistent gay relationship between K/S isn't the same as calling people racist or misogynists when they demand to get rid of the existing Spock/Uhura so that Spock can get paired with Kirk instead. It isn't the same as calling people racists when they imply that tolerance toward PoC is less important than tolerance toward gay people.

Though I don't think that all the S/U haters are racists. Slash fans (and, ironically, they're girls) just fall in the "OMG a vagina is getting in the way of my OTP!" trap.

K/S shippers use the homophobic argument against the haters because they believe that K/S is really a canon gay couple so if you refuse to acknowledge them as such you're called homophobic.

Didn't I just get through saying that not all K/S'ers are going around calling people homophobic for not shipping our ship? I'm a K/S'er, and I certainly don't go around calling people homophobic for not shipping K/S. I call you homophobic if you use words like 'unnatural', 'immoral', etc. in your arguments against slash in general. Stop with the hasty generalizations already! What is it with posters on this site and hasty generalizations?! The person who called another poster homophobic last week in that horrible wranky thread was ONE individual. One individual does NOT represent a group as a whole. Stop trying to paint in entire demographic of people, a demographic of people that numbers in the thousands, btw, in a bad light because of ONE person.

Are you trying to engage me in a shipwar? Was that the intent of this reply? Because it wont happen. I don't need to justify why I love my ship to you or anybody. I just do. K/S is what I like. Hell, K/S is what I LOVE. Just as you like Spock/Uhura. We have different taste, end of story. That's all there is to it.

So, no, I'm not going to engage in a shipwar with you. I'm not going to call you homophobic and if you call me racist I will laugh at you (especially because I, myself, am in a mixed race marriage and the irony would be freaking hysterical).

I will call you trolling for a fight, for which you picked the wrong person to engage. Sorry. I don't participate in mud slinging. What I do, do? Try and repair misconceptions.

Slash fans (and, ironically, they're girls)

Another hasty generalization! Geesh. Just so happens there are some MALE K/S'ers, too. Have some on my flist in fact. And before you start in with more of the common stereotypes associated with slashers. K/S'ers range in all ages. I should know, I myself, am 35. Of my list of several hundred, they range from people in their 20's to people in their 50's. I attended a con last year and met a K/S'er in her 60's (and thought it the coolest thing EVER). So no, that myth that all slashers are sexually confused teenage girls? Just that. A myth.

I'm asking you nicely here, please stop generalizing. It is not kind. If we want the shipwars to stop between the K/S crowd and the S/U crowd, we need to stop making blanket generalizations. Stop being so hostile to one another. We also need to recognize that an entire population of people as a whole cannot be held responsible for the actions of a few bad apples. If you would like, I can provide you with links to K/S'ers who have written meta on why engaging in shipwars and/or character bashing is juvenile and exhibits intolerance.

We like the same franchise, here! Let's start from that commonality and develop a rapport with each other instead of always being down each others throats!
