I like Mai. I never really understood why people hated her, maybe it was because people often wanted Zuko with Katara and they took out their frustration on Mai. Either way, it's okay to dislike characters! Hopefully it's for the right reasons, though.

I never hated her, but I also didn't find her terribly interesting until the Boiling Rock episodes. Her personality just doesn't make for a riveting character, imo.

YMMV of course, but I found her character riveting because of the things that other people didn't like about her. Her coldness, her blase attitude, her give-no-fucks reaction to either victory or defeat... to me it seems to hide what's going on in her head, which makes it more interesting for me to figure out who she is.

That's my take. I understand why others would think differently.

She wasn't very interesting to me during season 2, I'll give you that. but she had a lot more interaction with Zuko in season 3 so we kind of got to see a softer side to her? And like you said, the Boiling Rock gave her story some appeal. Unfortunately that was the last we saw of her until the end of the finale, lol.

Playing devil's advocate here...

It's ok to dislike characters for any reason. (Though I agree it's annoying when it's because they're ignorant of the character's basic traits...)

(Personally I'm neutral on Mai and on the pairing)
