If you want concrit, ask for it...?

If all you want is to get concrit on your own work so you can approve, you don't need to give it unsolicited to others too.

But even when an author asks for it, the request is rarely taken seriously. A lot of people have had too many bad experiences with leaving constructive comments only to be flamed and called names. Which has bred a culture where leaving concrit is far from the norm.

If they dont want to take it seriously, you cannot make them take it seriously. It's not their job or their responsibility to help the fic author improve their writing. Even if someone seriously asks for crit, the reader can go "lol no" and the author has no right to demand it from them.

I haven't seen that happen myself, so I'll have to take your word for it. Usually what passes for concrit in fandom is just complaints...

My only suggestion, if outright asking for it doesn't work, is to find one or two fellow writers who can act as your betas. Let them know exactly what you're looking for help with (e.g. characterisation, grammar picking, pacing, or the whole works) and discuss your work with them...?
