many people's idea of what constitutes actual helpful critique is wrong.

I think its less this and more that so many writers are special snowflakes who can't handle anyone saying something thats not positive about their writing. I'm talking particularly of the people who say "concrit appreciated" when what they actually mean is "you'd better tell me how fabulous I am and nothing less".

I agree its not the readers responsibility to teach however I think OP was more making the point that there are people reading who probably want to say something like "I thought that dialogue was a bit OOC in that scene" or "I didn't understand the wording in this bit" or "oh you made a grammatical error here", but these people refrain because of the perception that nobody can see constructive feedback as constructive and only as "flaming" or just being mean.
