Of course you don't have the priorities of a serious gamer. You bought a Wii. That said, combat was never the series' strong point. Go ahead and watch someone else play the other games on YouTube. That's what a LOT of people did.

How does one qualify as a "srs gamer"?

And what's with the wii hate? They have some pretty fun games and I own all 3 consoles.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
In order to be a serious gamer you have to be a fat basement dweller with no job who either owns a pc/xbox/ps3 and faps to cgi'd asses because you can't get any.

Also wii is for 12 yr olds and ~families~ who need to exercise.

idk, because a Wii isn't a "serious gaming machine." I have one over other gaming consoles because I share it with my sister (who was ~11 when we got it IIRC) and I enjoy Nintendo franchises. I'm going to get a 360 when I have the money for it, but until then it's Wii and PC.

Still, I hate terminology like "serious gamer" or "true gamer." You're a true gamer if you enjoy playing games. Bam.

Wii haters can hate. I can get pretty fucking serious when I play Mario Kart and Brawl

They should add a headsets in Wii. I will talk so much shit those COD kids will cry back to their mommies about how I fucked them up with a blue shell while using Peach...Come at me motherfuckers.

Yep, I'm into several "serious games," but I still have a wii because some of my favorite game franchises are on there, such as Mario and Legend of Zelda. Also Kirby, I fully admit to my love for that pink puffball.

There is a saying I've heard though that kinda applies to this discussion, where "anyone who's better or plays more than you has no life and anyone who's worse or more casual than you is a noob." Not true of course, but pretty much sums up how seriously you should take the term "srs gamer." :P

I get that you're going to raise a shitstorm over this, but if you'd phrased it "only bought a Wii", I'd wholeheartedly agree with you. Note that even those who are kicking up a fuss about it also have other systems.

The only people I know who only have a Wii are my parents. And they only play Wii Sports. Not only would I not call them gamers, they wouldn't call themselves gamers.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Now, when you say "only have a Wii" do you mean just this generation or that's the only video game console you own period?

Because since I prefer to handheld game, I only own a Wii, PSP, and DS as far as this generation of gaming goes, but have had consoles since the Atari 2600. I want to know if I can still be considered a gamer or not just because I don't own a 360 or a PS3.

not op but, yeah I get games to play them. Not watch other people play them. I hate it when people are all "just watch other people play it if you can't!"

No.

and wtf wii = not a serious gamer? jfc

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Almost all games have combat in them, though, of one kind or another. Aside from SH:SM, what else do you usually play? Visual novels? Hotel Dusk? Eroge? Tetris?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
OP: The Sims games and adventure games like this (http://www.amazon.com/Agatha-Christie-Murder-Orient-Express-Pc/dp/B000GCGQ6Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1336356775&sr=1-1). I generally only play PC games, not console ones.

To be honest, I think a lot of the issue I have with combat might be a Wii thing. I don't think I mind it so much on the computer, and I don't know if I'd mind it with a controller once I got used to the controls. The other Wii game I'm playing right now is Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, and I'm not that crazy about the combat in it because I have a hard time making the remote do the specific moves.

[identity profile] raemia.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're worried about compatibility issues for the SH 2, 3, and 4 ports, those are easy enough to fix. IMO the biggest problems that you'll have with them are the crappy porting/bugs and overpriced copies. I think they're really worth playing if you manage to get a hold of them, even if you don't really like combat. (Well, maybe not 4, if you don't want to deal with invincible ghosts everywhere)

also "serious gamer"???

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, Shattered Memories. To this date, that is the only Silent Hill game to make me sob out loud. That ending always gets to me. Such powerful emotion put in that game...

Anyway, Shattered Memories is basically a really well done Silent Hill AU. Where the campy original Silent Hill games tried to scare you, Shattered Memories tried to depress you. That's why I could never hate this game, because it never meant to be like the demon infested Silent Hill we knew before, and never tried to be. It had brilliant story telling.

[identity profile] xelestri.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
lol "serious" gamer. Protip: No one is a "serious gamer". Play whatever the hell you want and have fun.

[identity profile] milkcracker.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, chill. Do what is fun and affordable for you. Gaming isn't something you can do wrong as long as you are having fun.

And fuck everyone that gives you shit for not being "serious" enough about gaming.

The serious/extreme gamer does not exists because there is no static definition for it, so you don't have to worry about that. Plus, you're spending money on these games, don't buy them just to appease people who take gaming too seriously.

I love Shattered Memories, but I also have weird preferences for games. In some ways it might be more difficult than if it did have combat; that is, if you're the type to get disoriented during maze-chase levels. But it has a good story and imo carries the same Silent Hill vibe that made me love the series in the first place, so I think it's okay to start there.

[identity profile] i-paint-the-sky.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Shattered Memories was my first Silent Hill game too and I absolutely adore it. Obviously it is very different from the other games in how it works but I think it still has a lot of the same spirit to it and it has amazing storytelling.

I then went on to play Silent Hill 2 and am currently in the middle of Silent Hill, with SH3 sitting on my shelf waiting for when I'm finished with that (I bought a PS2 in order to play these). So yeah, play whatever order you want or just play Shattered Memories, though I do highly recommend the others (at least the first four, though I am still considering playing Homecoming. From what I can tell, Origins is not worth it).

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Shattered Memories not having combat is one of its biggest failings. I'm sorry, but it's a major reason I hate Penumbra and (especially) Amnesia, too. When I'm helpless, I don't get scared. I get angry -- "wtf why can't i kill you leave me the fuck alone gtfo afsfaspfaosfpasfopf *POWER BUTTON*"

Seriously why does my guy have to be such a big blubbering baby that he can't even defend himself with like a plank of wood? What kind of weaksauce fuckass loser is he?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
In Amnesia in particular, I don't think it's so much "your guy is a blubbering loser" as it is "the other guys are invincible Lovecraftian horrors". (The short story collection that came with the patch for Amnesia had a part where one of the monsters is shot -- with a gun -- and just walks away, and you can throw shit at them to slow them down if you're feeling brave.)

I liked the game, but I can never understand it when I see people being really frightened by it. Knowing that I would never run into a monster outside of the handful of chase sequences made me feel totally at ease.

Those aren't the priorities of a serious gamer, because ~serious gamers~ are a bunch of killjoy elitists who devote so much time and energy to a hobby that if they don't feel like they're king of that hill, they've got nothing. Don't be a serious gamer, be someone who enjoys your hobby the way that's fun for you and lets other people do the same.

As for Silent Hill, the combat's never really the most fun part of the game anyway. If you liked Shattered Memories, I'd encourage you to play some of the PS2 titles, if you know anyone who has a PS2 and would let you use it. 2-4 (I forget about 1, it really wasn't my favorite) have an easy mode for combat. Silent Hill is really, at least to me, more of an exploration game than anything else, and the monsters are just there to add more tension. It's not like you're supposed to blow through a small army of monsters and go YEAH, THAT WAS AWESOME, it's supposed to be a little stressful. If that's not what appeals to you, a youtube playthrough might be better, but it's not going to be the kind of game where you have to like the combat.

I don't get what's the fuss about not liking combat. Half the time it's just to give the player something to do so they don't get bored, and it really isn't the best way to do that in every single game.
