Maybe if you didn't do that kind of hero worship bullshit, they would.
If someone came up and said it was an "honor" to talk to me, I'd find them creepy and avoid them, too.

Seriously. I'm a BNF in several fandoms, and every single one of them is rife with the same people who want to lick your feet and shower praises on you for anything you do (I provide translations of the source material and am one of the more prominent and prolific fic writers).

No one ever just wants to CHAT or discuss the source material though--and on the odd chance they do, it quickly devolves into hero-worship or them just not being a good fit friend-wise period and then there's awkwardness :/

I'm totally flattered when 'normal' people come up and make friends with me and talk about fandom and then throw in, "Man I was so intimidated by you for forever!" because by that time they realize I'm a normal person like them who just happens to have something 'big' I contribute to fandom :/

that's sort of just how a lot of people talk on tumblr, though.
Like, people will post those little pictures of "awesome_fan_x started following you" with a celebratory gif and stuff. It's generally accepted as hyperbole.
