I...didn't see any psychological abuse in their relationship, until he accepted the deal with Palpatine and went off the rails (and that was more emotional anyway, accusing her of betraying him and implying she was cheating and stuff). Oh don't get me wrong -- he was a whiny selfish immature psychotic asshole who slaughtered a whole tribe and and never regretted it, and definitely wasn't anything close to someone Padme would waste her time on, let alone a good match for her (I avoid all language like "could've done better" and "didn't deserve" -- the value-labeling/auctioning/trading-of-commodities undertone of those phrases squicks me out more than I can even describe) but I just don't recall any instances of abuse. But then again, I haven't seen the movies in a while, so maybe I just missed it among the terrible dialogue and acting. Can someone give me an example?

Also, Snape? Come on...Snape is a way more awesome example of a gloriously enjoyable, fascinating, BAMF-ish nasty creepy asshole with a handful of redeeming qualities than Anakin. Anakin, IMO, is one of those ultra-disappointing wasted potential characters, who sounds awesome when described (especially with regards to his relationship with Obi-Wan and his spiral into evil), but the movies utterly failed to make his character arc or personality anywhere near believable for or worthy of the original series' Vader.

I share your distaste for "deserving" in context of a relationship. Person A doesn't either "deserve" or "not deserve" Person B. Person B gets to decide if they want to be involved with Person A.

Agree with how anakin was totally wasted in the movies, though I blame that on George Lucas and his total and utter inability to fucking write goddamn. I LOVED the novelizations of the prequels because they actually had a character arc and development. What they're doing with him in the Clone Wars cartoon is really good, IMO.

Commenting to second the novelization love <3 The third novelization replaces the movie in my headcanon. It's a pity Lucas just didn't let Matt Stover write the screenplays and some else direct, the prequels could have been SO much better.

I am now curious about tracking those down. Due to the sheer amount of Star Wars books out there though, what titles are we talking about here?

[identity profile] ansley15.livejournal.com 2012-05-09 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I was talking about the official novelization of "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" by Matthew Stover which fills out all (or at least most) of the stupid parts of the movie and gives alot of character development for everybody. But I've heard his other novels are good too.

Anybody else have recs for SW novels? I'm not actually in the fandom at all, despite being a fan of the films.

Thank you!

Haven't actually read any Star Wars novels since The Jedi Academy in middle school, so I'm obviosuly light years behind. ;)
