Maybe I'm wrong since I'm not in this fandom, but...isn't he a huge jerk? Is it just the "(stupid) women love assholes" thing, or is there something I'm missing?

I think part of it is the fact that he's played by Alan Rickman (YMMV re: his hotness, but clearly a lot of people think he's sex on legs.) And yes, partly ye olde "bad boy/woobie/sexy villain/antihero redeemed by the love of a good woman" trope.

But then you think about the actual real-life serial killers in prison who get proposals and suddenly this doesn't seem that bad.
