There are other ways to become well-known in fandom and well-liked for contributing than just fanworks. A BNF is just a well-known fan, often one whose opinion is respected because of their contributions in multiple arenas (or even just one).
A compliment is one thing; being fawned over and held to a higher standard just because you can write better than the average joe, having your every post picked apart because you're the one who can understand the source material directly, having everyone too intimidated to talk to you about the fandom you love because you know how to use spellcheck?
When you're good at something or well-known for something (in a positive respect), it changes your fandom experience and not always for the better. I really doubt the OP's cartoon went EXACTLY like that.
