I never watched Star Trek and don't really know this character, but, I'm of the opinion that people generally already have a romantic 'type' (learned from enviornment/family) and its from tv shows/books/movies that this is often realised.

Same. I started liking him way less after he got his emotion chip, though. I thought he was way more interesting and awesome and hilarious as a detached observer being all confused/fascinated by our weird human stuff.
