Just curious but how was Booth supposed to change towards Bones? Kid-wise, he would never be against having kids because he already has Parker and loves him to death. While I don't think he would have ever forced Bones to have kids (if they had been in an established relationship and in a position to talk about it, not just the emotional accident that resulted in Christine), I can't see him ever not wanting to have children with the woman he loves.

I mean ideologically wise, and this was one in a list. I don't know if he's still pushing marriage, but if so, he could stop that. They had a few episodes last season where his religion saved him from death or something, and while I don't think he should changed his religion, he still seemed pretty rigid about it when I stopped and I don't know how they're going to raise their child in that way, since Brennan is an atheist. Otherwise, it was more subtle. Whenever Booth and Brennan have a clash of ideals in an episode, Brennan ~sees the way. I know Brennan is trying to understand social interaction and Booth is helping her with that, but it's coming off like Brennan is stupid and Booth is always right. She learns from him, but lately I haven't really seen him learn from her. The more Booth became the moral center, the less I liked him.

Good point. Booth and the whole religion thing drove me crazy. I nearly turned off the TV when their baby was born in a barn, in hay, and they named her Christine. I can understand him getting defensive with Bones accidentally insults his religion but everyone has a freedom of religion and is allowed to think whatever they wish about other religions. His constant pushing of religion onto her drove me crazy.

So yeah, I can see what you mean now.

"I nearly turned off the TV when their baby was born in a barn, in hay, and they named her Christine."

I stopped watching several years ago because IMO the show was never the same after that Zach and the Gormogon nonsense--that's how they did the birth?!

That's not just insulting to the nonreligious; to many confessing Christians, misusing the iconography in such a way pretty much amounts to blasphemy. Just who did they think they think they were pandering to, anyway?

"But it will be cute, people will love it" /sarcasm

To be fair, they named her Christine after Brennan's mother, not because of how she was born, but yeah, it was kind of heavy-handed and awkward to watch. I'm not really sure what the writers were thinking there.

[identity profile] lit-wolf.livejournal.com 2012-05-09 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I really hated it, especially since there seemed to be no other point except that Bones had been pointing out all of the logic flaws she saw in the Nativity story and they want her to give birth the same way... I don't even know why, to prove her wrong? Ugh, I really hated it!

I grew up Catholic, but am not very religious, and I found this to be insulting and pointless.

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
On the other hand, we have Brennan constantly stating it as fact that his religious beliefs are wrong and often outright insulting it. So it kind of balances out.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's no more insulting than what Booth is doing. I'd be pretty damn offended if a guy suggested we "need" to be married to live together and insisted on baptizing my hypothetical child.

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's my point. They are both being equally offensive. Both of them are pretty stuck in their ways and unwilling to see that other points of view are equally valid. There have been times when each of them have pissed me off. The writers seem to think that they have to have them both be blunt about their different viewpoints and hit us over the head with it. You'd think that by this time both of them would have learned to respect the other's viewpoints. Doesn't being in a relationship mean you at least have to listen to each other?

But it doesn't balance out. It's not that they have different views they find impossible to reconcile. I would be cool with that, although I would also think they shouldn't be in a relationship and they definitely shouldn't have a child if that's the case. It's that in the narrative, Booth is considered more right. His views are often what Brennan comes around to seeing, and if there's an argument on ideals alone, she's the one who often capitulates. Besides which, there have been several times last season where the narrative has outright confirmed Booth's belief as "correct," like by having the ghost of his marine friend help him off the boat. I was prepared to believe it was a hallucination, but then someone else, Brennan?, saw the ghost too, and that was it for me. So no, the show views Booth as the moral center. He is "right" most of the time, versus them learning from each other. And even when they do come to an "equal" understanding of each other, it seems like she is being open-minded or at least willing to consider his point of view, while he's patronizing her. That's how it comes off to me.

And don't forget Brennan lecturing students on the dangers of rational thinking--it was being too logical that made Zach an alleged cannibal serial killer.
