Okay, this is probably not the best place to ask and all, but...

Could someone please explain why the word "female", and "girl" to a lesser extent, is now considered derogatory towards women?

I've been seeing some objections to it, and I still don't quite get why. Is it only the SJWs who don't like it, or is this the general trend on the Internet?

When people talk about men and women, you often see them saying girls instead of women to indicate that they don't have any agenda of their own and aren't proper rational people like the men.

Female is offensive because it's a biological term implying that all women must be female (which is not the case, see: trans* people) and it also reduces a woman to her biological functions, which is often done by sexists who think the only worthwhile thing a woman can do is reproduce.

Former is overly scientific, almost reducing you to an animal or the other, latter is condescending/patronising whatever because of the links to childhood.

I think it depends entirely on usage/context.

Somebody saying "I like females" as in the female sex, who happens to have a person attached but whatever, has a completely different connotation from "I like women" as in persons that belong to the female gender. "You're such a girl/you're so girly" can be misogynistic depending on what it's talking about as it implies girly is a negative thing to be, and to say something like "all the men and girls in the audience" can be offensive because it's making the women seem like children or less mature than the men and not deserving of full adult status.

I don't think saying something like "I identify as female" or "my bird is female" is generally offensive, though. Nor is "all of the girls and boys" since there's no age/maturity/adulthood disparity.
