Okay this is a serious question, but is my little pony a legit fandom? I've been seeing secrets for it for ages, like actual, serious secrets but it seems too....juvenile. What's the typical age group of people in this fandom?

not judging anyone btw. to each their own really

[identity profile] bellerose11788.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Actually a whole mass of the fans of Mlp are older than the intended audience. Most of the fans i have been in contact with are between 16 and 25, with me in there at a solid 23.

[identity profile] yunho.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
thats what i figured but for some reason im still a little surprised. must be a pretty good show i guess...but that doesn't explain the secrets ive seen discussing shipping and sex between the ponies. this is a kid's show, right....?

[identity profile] bellerose11788.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yea....I would agree with you, but with fandom in general it really doesn't matter if it's a kid show or not. Shippers are gonna ship.

[identity profile] yunho.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
ahaha forgot about internet rule 34. nothing should surprise me by this point.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the actual intended age of the show is nothing to shippers.

Sesame street porn is a thing that exists! Because it's not enough to ship Bert and Ernie, no. You need pictures of them kidnapping children for snuff sex (yes, this picture exists. No, I'm not linking it).

But the current generation of my little pony is, well, better then previous ones. Most attribute that to Lauren Faust's work on the series (I'll spare you the details, but She's got a good track record in the business). It got some memetic proliferation on various dregs of the internet, followed by genuine fans.

Thus were born the bronies.

Oh, and all hail Derpy.

Not being a defensive brony or anything, but how is shipping itself that inappropriate? Especially since the kid fandom and the adult fandom don't really cross over at all?

[identity profile] yunho.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
i never said it was inappropriate. i'm just surprised that an older generation would take a kid's show so seriously to go so far as to instigate legit ship wars and stuff. not to undermine the show or anything - this is just the first kid's show i've encountered that got a fandom so intense, at least from what i can see.

idk anything about this fandom, but from other comments, i'm a little incredulous over the idea of 'pony-rape,' but i guess rule 34 or ykinmk or whatever. /kanyeshrug

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen a few kids' shows with some pretty big fandoms. I was really into Teen Titans back in the day, and so were a lot of people. On the younger side, stuff like Pokemon (at least the show is pretty much just intended for kids) and some shoujo/shounen for younger audiences is pretty well-loved. Ponies is a pretty special case though.

I'm also pretty bwuh? over people taking it ultra seriously and having these huge arguments over it. I've seen a lot of it that's mostly lighthearted and fun, and kind of in the know that it's pretty ridiculous. I wouldn't really care if you undermined it, I just don't see how shipping stuff is an automatic badge of seriousness? The people I know who ship ponies are pretty cool about it and don't shipwar or anything. I think if you're having an argument about marshmallow horses that isn't entirely just for fun, you need to step back and take a look at your priorities or something.

I'd avoid the fandom if you really don't want to see any of the dumb fights, though. The loud disagreeables are gonna be pretty loud and disagreeable.

[identity profile] yunho.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, i know what you mean in terms of some shows getting bigger fandoms but for kid's shows, like you said, it was things like pokemon and anime i think is a little different because despite being appropriate for kids, most anime is still marketed toward a really broad demographic.

lol yeah honestly that was my main point. Idk, based on the secrets it just seemed like people were taking a show that looked pretty clear cut so seriously. Based on the artwork, I kept picturing myself arguing with someone over the powerpuff girls or dexter's lab.

shipping isn't 'an automatic badge of seriousness' on it's own, in my opinion it just depends on how far people take it. i mean, as a kid i used to subconsciously ship spongebob and squidward, despite not really even understanding the concept. to get really really heated over something like shipping ponies seems a little silly imo (but i suppose i feel that way about every ship, if i'm honest. at some point i think people just need to sit down and think about how upset they're getting over a fictional couple).

anyway! yeah, you and all the others got me curious now, so I think i'll watch a few episodes. haven't watched any cartoons in years and i used to love playing with mlp as a kid lol.

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that depends on the anime. I think some kids' anime is marketed toward a broad demographic, or at least deliberately inclusive of a periphery demographic, but some, at least in Japan, would get you the same reaction if you liked it as somebody who likes ponies gets here (not necessarily hostile, but definitely "you do know that's for little kids, right?") And some of those ones have huge fandoms here- it's really just the difference between kids' shows that come from here, and kids' shows from somewhere else that can be rationalized as not really kids' shows?

IIRC pony fans started out being pretty chill about their fandom, but as soon as a weird little subculture started to form around it, they got kind of stupid.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it has a fan base, and a very large and adult one at that. You're on LJ and f!s and haven't heard of "bronies", the young men who are super in MLP FIM? I'm only barely in the fandom (I watch it irregularly and only seek out fanart) partly because there are some seriously unpleasant corners of it.

[identity profile] yunho.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
ive only vaguely noticed them tbqh. yeah ive seen the secrets but have never really read them or bothered with the comments and even tho ive heard of 'bronies' i didnt (and dont) care enough to really figure out what exactly they are. i dont even have a tv nor have i watched television from an actual tv in over a year so no, i've never watched mlp nor have i ever felt the need to do so.

unpleasant corners to the fandom? how on earth can there possibly be any wank over (what i only assume is) a kids show? shouldn't it just be for fun, or is there a lot of srsbsns in it?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Off the top of my head:

'Brony' is/isn't alienating to female fans!
I came out as a pony fan, that's just like coming out as gay/trans!
Yay porn/pony porn is evil!
Yay grimdark fics/grimdark is terrible!
Pony porn is/isn't 'furry'!
The toys shouldn't have brushable hair!
Hasbro should cater to us, not children!
Yay writing characters as gay/ nay writing gay/ okay only if it's lesbians!
Shipping!
Best/worst episode/pony/song/fanfic/fanart/ship!
Fan theorizing/ continuity wank!
Background character/brony mascot gets speaking lines, it is/isn't a gross stereotype of mentally disabled people!
Minor character(s) is/isn't a racist stereotype!
The people who think it was bigoted are the real bigots!
Censorship!
Old gens suck, GTFO people who have been in the fandom from the beginning!
Anti-abortion!

...Honestly, I think it'd be more accurate to talk about the pleasant corners of the fandom; the show has one of the wankiest fanbases since Harry Potter.

[identity profile] yunho.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
wow. just wow. and i thought my fandom was bad in terms of wank, lol. i think i'll give the show a try and just steer clear of the fandom lol. thank you for that quite comprehensive list OTL

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
DA

IMHO, if you just watch the show, you're missing out on all of the amazing fic, art, pmvs, everything that makes watching the show so much better. It's a great show, yeah, but on its own it's... well, not the next Buffy, let's put it like that. You can certainly get enjoyment out of it, but there are far, far many more "pleasant corners" of the fandom than there are wankfests. Equestria Daily is basically the go-to place for all things pony and as far as I can tell is more-or-less wank-free.

(And besides, without fandom to run around with an overactive imagination, Discord would be just another goofy-looking one-off villain who made the main characters sad. And OP wouldn't have had a reason to come up with lots of backstory for xir fic. And my iPod would be filled with really boring stuff instead of Aviators and Glaze and Equestrian battle music (!). And for all that it can have its bad points (the Derpy blowup a few... what, weeks, months? ago comes to mind), the sheer amount of love and tolerance is well worth it.)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
MLP fandom seems to be one that uses its show's moral -- "love and tolerance" -- while not really understanding it at all. The Derpy blowup was pretty much where the creepy world of bronies showed its true (very creepy) colors.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Contrary to the above anon, I'm going to encourage you to indeed check out the show and steer clear of the fandom. Huge chunks of the fandom are really gross and horrible and if the show isn't entertaining without reading about ponies raping each other (this is a huge thing for some reason???) or whatever then, well, you probably don't really like the show, do you?

For what it's worth, it's a cute little cartoon and I've watched a good few episodes of it and I still find its "fandom" truly baffling. It's exemplary as a show for little girls, but as far as its universal appeal goes it doesn't really have anything that almost every other cartoon that exists these days doesn't. Make no mistake, it's still very much for children.

[identity profile] bellerose11788.livejournal.com 2012-05-10 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly my best memory from the fandom comes from a fanfic called cupcakes. The fandom flipped out over this fic saying that it portrayed Pinkie Pie as a psychotic killer.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it does... but if that's your best memory then you should really, really read this: http://zaptiftun.deviantart.com/art/The-Light-in-the-Darkness-257019544?

It's an alternate ending to Cupcakes that's possibly one of the most heartwarming fics in the fandom. If Cupcakes is the worst of the fandom, then this completely cancels it out.

[identity profile] bellerose11788.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
AWWWWWWWW!!!!!! That was so flippin adorable!

(Anonymous) 2012-05-11 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
That's the sweetest fic I've ever read, and it's completely IC too!

[identity profile] yunho.livejournal.com 2012-05-11 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
lmao omg can i ask for the link to that? now i'm really curious!

(Anonymous) 2012-05-11 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Just Google "mlp Cupcakes". It's pretty infamous. You should get the EqD or TV Tropes page within the first few hits.

Anti-abortion!

...normally I'd ask, but this fandom has enough trainwrecks as it is.
