It's a really slow realisation that "hey, this character whose name is Japanese suspiciously can't use kanji..." "why are there so many orphans in the town..." "is it normal to let teenage girls into the army..."
But Haibane Renmei comparison because slice-of-life, loved by its fans, a bit under the radar, based in a small town, artistic leanings, atmospheric. I was scrabbling for a good comparison so I do apologise if it wasn't accurate. That FB conversation made me so mad! >.
