Lol I made my own Final Fantasy world with characters based on me, and my friends it was so much fun, but I just lost steam for it after a while. No shame in that. It does kinda stink you can't share it with your friends, mine got a kick out of the FF thing.

I've written entire novels worth of Sueness, and I keep 'em on my hard drive not to be read by anyone until I'm safely dead. I had a blast writing them, but don't expect anybody else is going to enjoy them the way I do.

aww, this sounds like fun! I think that when people mock self-insert Mary Sue fic it's mocking the fact that people are putting it out there on the internet and aren't keeping it for their own fantasy; I bet a lot of people still fantasize about it!

Not QUITE related but my friends and I recently associated ourselves with the four main Legend of the Seeker characters, which is kind of a thing you do when you're younger but it was still fun to think about. :)

My friends and I constantly verbally write crack!fic about what it would be like for us to go to Hogwarts or Narnia or Middle Earth etc.

Dude, I was on a board where we did this ALL THE FUCKING TIME. It's awesome!

There's a reason people write Mary-Sues--they're fun! The only part that makes it twitchy for me is when the canon characters start going all OOC around the Sue.

When board-friends and I would write fic like this, we'd have the story set in that series' particular universe, but make the story revolve around our own characters (although canon folks might be name-dropped or make a cameo appearance from time to time). Nothing to be ashamed of!

You could try tricking them into embracing Sue-y OC's of their own by making them join pottermore as "characters" and then you could sneak cracky stories about your pottermore-Hogwarts time into the equation until they are converted - who knows, they might like it! A friend and I love to tear into horrible Sue/Stu-fic and we still have OCs of our own. The trick is: Never take yourself seriously even one step of the way and don't share silly Sue-Fiction with all of the internet and then you should be safe.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. If anything, it's really nice that you care for your friends enough to imagine going on adventures with them.
