That seems to be very common, I can't tell you how many people I know who say they learned way more about sex from fandom than they did in school or from parents or even peers. Hell, I even learned a little bit more about my own body from fanfic I read several years ago. Most of what I read these days tends to be slash, but I can always snag some pointers from that too.
