Notes:

If you or anyone you know in fandom writes poetry, check this out. You may be being plagiarized. Note: Please do NOT hassle the publishing company itself. They've agreed to pull the book; we're waiting for it to come down from all the eBook sites. We still don't know the entire contents of the book, though - or who else has been stolen from (there is a clear fandom-author connection, however).

eh, it does that for a lot of things. Like "noncon" (but it searches "non-con")

if you search "Raped" then it'll also pop up just "rape" too

(Anonymous) 2012-05-11 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the fact that you have to search "raped" or "rapes" in order to get hits because "rape" is so generic is...I dunno. It gave me pause.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-12 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's a search engine, not a person. It's just the configuration of the letters themselves that does it. It's not specific enough to not through back a ridiculous amount of results. You're reading way too much into it, anon.

I wonder if they deliberately told it not to search certain terms because they were potentially squicky or they made it so that certain terms wouldn't show up when googling so that people wouldn't get the wrong idea about the site.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-12 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
idk, it searches a lot of other potentially squicky terms (like watersports, scat, shota, bestiality etc)

[identity profile] ologist.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think so. Because I know for a fact that it USED to search for rape, while excluding the other generic terms.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-11 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I just tried this and...I'm surprised. That is kind of depressing. :C

(Anonymous) 2012-05-11 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I suggest not feeling anything at all, apathy is your friend. If yo disagree though, then I don't care.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-12 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Apathy is so hip/
Everyone is doing it."

I thought FFN didn't allow adult fic, although I know it's not policed very well. Perhaps they've made a list of words you aren't allowed to search for?

I ran searches for the f word, the s word and the c word and the same thing happened (no results - 'too generic') Very strange

I thought it was only adult RPF that was banned?

[identity profile] x-varda-x.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Although it seems open to interpretation, the Content Guidelines state:
'Please note FanFiction.Net does not accept explicit content, Fiction Rating: MA'

Ratings info (http://www.fictionratings.com/) MA - Content is only suitable for mature adults. May contain explicit language and adult themes

RPF isn't allowed at all

(Anonymous) 2012-05-12 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
"raped" is allowed though.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-12 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
They're saying nothing other than the fact that if you type only 'rape' in the search box you will get a million search results from every single category and either the search engine can't handle that or it's just trying to streamline your results.

[identity profile] anonlulz.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
This.

FFNet is not exactly very wordy in its messages. Reading too much into them is quite pointless.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-12 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
...but you used to be able to search using the word 'rape' and the search engine handled it just fine? also, just tried after narrowing several categories down and it gives the same 'too generic' response.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-12 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
The search engine used to only bring up 100 results no matter what you searched. I'm no expert on this kind of stuff, but it's still likely that the problem lies on how the search engine is programmed and not that it's some kind of social commentary.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-05-12 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I understood.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of thought that was the point of the secret? That there are so many hits when rape is the keyword?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-12 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it's something they built in because somebody didn't like the idea of people searching for "rape." For example, you can search for "sick" which gives 21,000+ results, but "raped" which includes "rape" results is 14,500 results.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-12 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect it's just a block on searching for 'rape'; you can search for 'love', which I'm almost certain has more results, without any problems.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't understand what the warning was for on this secret. The secret didn't have any depictions of rape; all it had was the word "rape", which, if anyone was going to be "triggered" by, they would be triggered by the "TRIGGER WARNING for rape".

Honestly confused.
