Notes:

If you or anyone you know in fandom writes poetry, check this out. You may be being plagiarized. Note: Please do NOT hassle the publishing company itself. They've agreed to pull the book; we're waiting for it to come down from all the eBook sites. We still don't know the entire contents of the book, though - or who else has been stolen from (there is a clear fandom-author connection, however).

well the secret says the friend left the laptop open, which sounds like it was the word doc or w/e on the screen, it's not the same as hunting through all their documents or whatever for something.

OP still had to sit down and actually read the document long enough to see what the content was. Maybe I'm just a decent human being and know, you know, common courtesy. But I wouldn't have even glanced at a friend's screen long enough to see what the text even was, let alone sit down and actually read it.

Again, OP's friend may be a hypocrite, but OP is a sketchy bag of dicks and I wouldn't ever trust them again if I was their friend.

That's just because you have trust issues.

No, someone with trust issues would feel the need to snoop on other people's things to make sure they're not doing them wrong somehow.

When someone has shown pretty blatant disregard for a standard boundary, it's pretty reasonable to worry that they might do so again.

agreed. what's basic respect and common courtesy??? we just don't know

I don't know. I have been on the other end of this equation myself. Left my laptop open while I was gone. Had a roommate go through and read private entries on my journal. My only response was... well I shouldn't have left my laptop open in the living room with my journal logged in. If there is something you don't want people to read... don't leave it out in the open in full view of everyone else.

Really? To be honest, if I left my laptop open/computer monitor on with word documents open and had a friend over, I wouldn't expect them NOT to look. Would I do it myself? Probably not, because I don't care what someone is or isn't writing/reading, but I can't say I'd care if someone I knew and trusted read something I was writing/reading.

Then again, this all boils down to personal boundaries, expectations of such, and how close of friends they are. I've even left documents/internet pages open while lending my parents my laptop. If I don't want them to read/see something? I'm smart enough to close out the window before handing it over.

Of course, my mother's known I write porn for about eight years, so... like I said, it goes back to personal boundaries, etc.

If OP's friend has been clear about 'my computer is off limits, even if I leave it open in the middle of a freeway', then yeah, OP sucks. But if they're the kind of friends where, "Hey Josie, I'm going to check my email/read something on your computer!" is met with, "Whatever, just minimize my windows, okay?" then it doesn't seem like OP was really being a horrible person/indecent human being.

Or maybe OP just reads fast? I've certainly done it enough times - casually glance at someone else's computer screen (or heck, just randomly look around and happen to see one), and realise that I've unconsciously read whatever's onscreen in that short glance.
