That sucks.

I've had friends who were like that for other bands, and it was annoying enough, but I can see where for TMBG it would be worse. I mean, I love them lots, don't get me wrong, but I acknowledge that John and John are a lot more into dissonance than most people want in their music. And neither necessarily have the most marketable of voices. And accordions are pretty high on peoples' lists of hated instruments.

So, that, with their emphasis on being kinda weird, they're hardly the greatest band to force someone to listen to.

(But you've reminded me that my best friend in high school hated TMBG "just because [I] loved them so much." I never tried to get her to listen to them, and I never talked about them outside of discussions of favorite bands...Maybe musical preference just shouldn't be discussed in high school.)

Yeah. It's supposed to sound a little annoying, I think, because that makes it more amusing in its way. (I hope it's clear what I mean here -- it's not a dis.) But if you're already not interested, yeah, it gets annoying. (This is why I'll tell people about the extreme metal bands I like if they want to know, but won't insist they listen. Not everyone likes intentionally earouching vocals, thanks.)

As far as you and your friend, though, you're probably right. I remember a lot of us being pretty pushy about wanting to share what we enjoyed. And kind of obsessive about it in that kid way so we never left one another alone, either. :-/ But you probably weren't so bad. The guy I was buddies with turned out to be legit creepy in more ways than that, so I think that's part of why it felt especially uncomfortable.

Man, I am sorry that you had a creep representing TMBG to you. And that you had to deal with a creep in general.

Also, I cannot help but feel that from the general reasonableness of the give-and-take in all of these comments on this secret, that the OP just had the misfortune of talking to the wrong fans. So it goes, I suppose.
