This secret has made me feel sad :( It's because it's THAT episode and also one of the worst days of my life was when I had to take my rabbit to the vet to be put down. I held him as the injection went in and I swear he knew roughly what I was doing. I know people think I'm just being a stupid animal lover and don't get me wrong, he was in so much pain it was the kindest thing (he had an abscess in his jaw that got so big his jaw probably collapsed) but I still hated that I had to do it.

BUT OP, I didn't mean to make you feel worse. One thing that has helped me cope all these years is the people saying that my rabbit probably had a really happy life with me. He was loved and never wanted for anything. You made a decision that was best for your dog, I imagine you still love your dog. And even when she's gone nobody can take that away. I'm sure that in her own way she doesn't feel anything bad. Didn't Seymour wait because he was loyal and thought Fry was coming back? I never got the impression he felt abandoned.

Sorry for the tl:dr. And I'm sorry about your dog. I hope you'll get through it ok.

That's how I feel about that scene. It's sad but I never felt like the dog had bad feelings toward Fry.

And it sounds like the OP did something really good for their dog and shouldn't feel bad.

I had a dog I got in second grade and he lived until after I had graduated college and gotten married. It was still rough when he passed, but I'm sure he still loved me and my parents (who he was living with.)

I did get the impression that he kept waiting and waiting and died with a broken heart.

Unfortunately I recently saw the Richard Gere movie "Hachi" which is basically 90 minutes of the this episode that is much more heartbreaking.

I'm with OP. The thought of a pet who greets you enthusiastically to end up just waiting and waiting for you to return and you don't get to is one of the most depressing things I can imagine.

As a sidenote: I don't even care that Futurama retconned this episode so that an alternate version of Fry could return. The damage is done. Too depressing.

DA

You're brave as hell, anon. I can't read the Hachiko's wiki page without crying. There are tears in my eyes now just remembering the story.

I think I need to go find some chocolate.

He was certainly waiting but I just didn't think he resented Fry, but maybe I'm reading into it.

I've never heard of the movie but I've heard of Hachi the dog. Not sure I could handle the movie.

I agree about the retcon. To me it doesn't count.

There was a Pokemon episode based on Hachi's story, but with a Kyuukon/Ninetales in his place.

... she waited about 150 years for her master to return from a "short trip," outliving all his servants, and when she finally realized he wasn't coming back, she couldn't leave because a hoshi no tama pre-pokeball/monsterball bound her there.

Then, Takeshi/Brock came and he looked just like her master... ;^;

Even before the retcon it's not like he ever died in that scene (sad though it is anyway). He was flash-fossilized standing up.

Kinda OT, but I had a rabbit who developed abscesses in his jaw and one behind his eye. My vet did an experimental treatment with penicillin that got rid of them and let him live a couple more years, albeit with daily treatments. When they first diagnosed him, they said it was a death sentence, so I'm not sure how well the procedure is known among most vets.
