My dog is very old for a dog her size, but she is in relatively good health right now, which I'm very thankful for. She has a lot of white hair on her face (which used to just be cinnamon and black) and has some arthritis and general spaciness/slight hearing loss, but no major/life threatening problems. I try not to think about what will happen to her down the road and I hope for many more years for her to be healthy and a part of my family. However, I know that old dogs can go downhill very fast and I spend 3/4 of my time at college, an hour away from my house.
I have told my family that if she begins to go downhill to notify me. I will do everything in my power to get home - drop work if I can, skip classes unless I absolutely can't, cancel plans - so I can be with her when the time comes if I am not already there. I can't imagine what it will be like if somehow I can't get home. It would be so much more devastating than it already will be.
Hugs and condolences, OP. Best wishes.
