Fandom question:

I've recently rejoined one of my old fandoms and has starting reading a lot of old fanfics. A lot of them were last updated or completed five or more years ago. I want to leave reviews since a lot of them are pretty good, but I'm a little insecure about leaving review in something maybe the author doesn't care anymore, and in which the last review dates from several years ago.

What should I do?

I say go ahead and review - I'm always happy to get comments on stuff no matter how long ago I posted it. Just don't ask that they update or fix anything. Also, don't necessarily expect them to reply, some people move on from fandoms and get new user accounts sometimes and don't check the old ones. But, honestly, for me, it's really lovely to know that someone enjoys something that I created.

I second this. It's always nice to get comments, even on old stuff, and even in fandoms I'm not in anymore.

I see... well, that makes me feel better, and I think I'll do it then, thank you!

You're welcome. (-:

OK, gotcha! :) Thanks for the help!

No problem. ☺

Leave the review. I recently got a review on a fic that I posted up 11 years ago (ff.n sent me a message) and it bloody well made my day to discover that it's still being enjoyed. Any author who rages about hdu appreciate crap I wrote years ago is a fucking asshole.

If it's really worrying you, how about prefacing your comment with something like "I know you wrote this 5 years ago, and you may have moved on since, but I really enjoyed it, etc"?

[identity profile] imati-lau.livejournal.com 2012-05-15 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I like that sentence, I may as well use it, thank you! :)

Chiming in with everyone else to say "leave a review". It's far more likely you'll make the author's day than piss them off/weird them out. The only thing is if it's a work in progress that hasn't been updated in 5 years, don't beg/demand the author to finish it. That can get creepy/annoying.

OT: YOUR ICON! OMFG I LOVE THAT MOVIE!

[identity profile] imati-lau.livejournal.com 2012-05-15 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'll do my best, although so far there has been a couple of times when I'm "Wow, this is so awesome... oh God, I can't believe how good this is... OH GOD WHY THIS WAS LEFT UNFINISHED... Must resist urge... To ask for updates. But yeah, I can see why that would be annoying, so I don't do it.

Yeah, I know, right? That movie is so sweet, I love it too! ;)

As someone who has been posting fanfics for many years now, go ahead and leave a review!! :D You have no idea how awesome it is to find out that people are still coming across your story and enjoying it. I know some people frown on "necroposting" (lol I love that name) in old threads but I don't think that replies to reviews at all. :-)

Review! In my experience people are happy to know you enjoyed something they wrote, even if it's old enough to have a layer of dust gathering on it now. -_^

And who knows, you might accidentally nudge someone back down memory lane too.
