This reaction seems over-the-top. The person correcting you on "per se" was simply stating a fact, not slamming you--and wouldn't you rather know when you were flat-out wrong?

Hmm... possibly. But I felt a bit of tone. (I'll admit it can be hard to tell though.)

"Felt a bit of tone", really? I would just take the critique graciously and go on knowing that I now write better because I have eliminated an aggravating common mistake from my vocabulary but that's just me.
