This is the first time I have ever said this, but did I write this secret in my sleep? OP, your sentiments are my sentiments. I appreciate that you made it a point to repeat that he's a hockey player because that's always what really gets me. Even the fics that do remember that he was on the team with the other three tend to emphasize that he was the worst player, for seemingly no reason other than to make him seem "fragile".

I'm so glad I'm not alone! I thought it might be some weird fandom-wide thing and I just didn't know the rules or something.

I've noticed the hockey thing too. Either he's not strong enough, or not fast enough, or he just joined because his friends were on the team and he's always on the verge of quitting. Also, despite the fact that he's the most health-conscious of them all, he's always blatantly ignoring obvious symptoms and ending up in the hospital. The kid's one contradiction after another.

I know it's just me, but my headcanon is that his dad is in the military (he always just struck me as a military kid; neat, short hair, more disciplined that the rest...), and from what I've seen (and experienced) there's a certain kind of toughness that comes from that.
