She's the size of a toothpick.

No, she isn't. She's actually a more average-sized woman. I actually saw a lot of people criticizing her when she was cast by saying she'd "better slim down" and that she was "too fat" to play Black Widow (she's not fat and never has been, but she isn't a size 0 like every other woman in Hollywood).

I definitely believed that she could do martial arts and kick ass at her size. I mean, if we were looking at some tiny waif I'd find it hard to believe, but ScarJo isn't that imo.

Anyway, as ridiculous as Hollywood is, you really think they'd hire and market a woman bigger than Scarlett? As much as I hate their fatphobic bullshit... I have to acknowledge they never would. Fuck, people thought Scarlett was too big for the role.

Agreed. Scarlett is in no way the size of a toothpick and she never has been. She's certainly not fat, but I definitely buy those actions scenes coming from her than I would if, say, Gwyneth Paltrow had gotten that role. I thought ScarJo was well cast and I normally don't think much of her as an actress.

ScarJo did amazingly in the role. And I was really glad they cast her -- I love seeing actresses in movies who aren't thinner at the waist than some people's wrists, lol. And I bought the actions from her, definitely.

While I'm glad they didn't put some size zero waif in this role, I do wish they'd made ScarJo take, IDK, some pilates classes or arm work or something. I do martial arts, and it's pretty obvious to me that she has very little to no effective muscle at all. I'm not saying this as criticism of the actress (she and her curves are lovely!), but if they make the guys get cut to make it believable, I don't know why they couldn't have her get a little bit more in shape.

And not fight in heels. Dear god, I hate action scenes with women in heels. Just... no.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but there are so many muscled actors around they can choose. I have a hard time thinking of well-known young actresses who are a bit muscular - it goes against what producers are usually looking for. But I don't mean they ever thought of casting such an actress - just like they think women should fight in heels, they think they should look like they never pulled weight.

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
does she fight in heels, though? I honestly can't remember. The only bit about her shoes I remember is that she's not wearing them in the interrogation scene.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
She definitely doesn't fight in heels in Iron Man 2. I really can't remember what kinds of shoes she was wearing in the Avengers and I can't find any pictures of her feet when she's wearing her uniform.

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
this was WAY harder to find than I expected given Joss' obsession with feet

well.
at least they're not stilettos?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
It could be worst but it's definitely a bit of a disappointment after IM2. I was always so happy she was wearing sensible boots in Iron Man. At least she didn't do much combat fighting in those ones from the Avengers.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, I think those aren't the shoes she actually wears for full shots in the film. I could swear she's wearing sensible boots - but it doesn't surprise me that they'd put Johansson in platforms when you can't see her feet. Her co-stars are all huge and she's pretty tiny. Heels is an easier fix than putting her up on an apple box for every single shot.

DA

Anyone who thinks she's too fat is an idiot, but this isn't about fat or skinny. I've known a lot of female athletes and bodybuilders, and she just doesn't look like she has the muscle to pull that stuff off.

There's a big difference between fat and muscle definition. Also, being muscular doesn't mean being big, especially for women. It's a matter of shape, not size.
