I don't think an author's fans picking up on trouble based on what someone writes is at all weird.
Also, I'm not sure what you meant, but "the one who normally tops" might mean "the one who that author normally writes as the top," not "Only one character can legitimately be portrayed as the top in this pairing OMG."
