That's not weird by itself, but I do think people can sometimes pick up on authors' emotional states if they start writing things that are really different from their usual. Sometimes it's clear which character an author identifies most with, and if they start writing a bunch of bad things happening to that person, well... it might just be a stylistic kick, but might mean something else.

I don't think an author's fans picking up on trouble based on what someone writes is at all weird.

Also, I'm not sure what you meant, but "the one who normally tops" might mean "the one who that author normally writes as the top," not "Only one character can legitimately be portrayed as the top in this pairing OMG."
