See, I was convinced he was dead - until the stuff with the cards, and how Fury had lied about that in order to galvanise the Avengers, and then I started thinking about how we just see the medical team getting to Coulson after the open-eyed-death-scene, and then suddenly Fury tells everyone that 'they've called it' but we never actually saw them call it - I have sort of convinced myself that the medical team managed to pull him back but Fury kept up the pretence in order to galvanise the team into actually being a team and fighting for something...

I may be delusional, but I think the options are definitely there to bring him back, and reasonably so (in my mind, in this universe - I mean, Cap was a capsicle for 70 years, so in my mind anything can happen - the rules of this universe are stretchier than ours).

I'm probably delusional, to be fair, it has been said before o_0

This was what I spent the entire movie thinking. I kept waiting for him to show up at the end. And then he didn't. And I was so freaking sad. :(

But - I think there's definitely still room to bring him back later -- probably they made it open-ended on purpose.

I'm hoping he just shows up in Iron Man 3, all, yeah, I'm alive and a bad ass. Suck it.

That scene, right at the end, with Fury and Hill. I swear, every time I see it (3 now), I expect it to last exactly two seconds longer. Because Hill walks away. We pan out to see the whole deck while she does. She passes a slightly-balding man in a suit, who hands her a file as he walks down the whatever-you-call-that-thing-in-the-middle that only leads to Fury. Then we swing around, to Fury's back, slightly closing in, as if tracking with another character.

Then it cuts out.

And I always expect it to go on to us seeing Coulson take his spot next to Fury, and possibly say something about Fury owing him some new cards.

Also, what is that thing that the med team has when they bend down over Coulson. Everything goes slow, and the scene's a little dark, but it doesn't look like a body bag or a defib or anything... Magic SHIELD tech?

Clark Gregg said he doesn't expect to do any more movies, but then again, by all accounts, he never expected to be playing Coulson in any movie except the one he was working on at any given time, so... If nothing else, I hope we see him back in the Black Widow prequel.

OMG I need this now.

Oh man, I thought I was seeing things during that scene at the end. But after also watching it 3 times, that guy I am pretty sure has facial hair. I was convinced he was there somewhere, but alas... T_T Though they probably did all those things on purpose, just to get us speculating. It's a great setup for what could be.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if they had the technology to save him.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
TBH, if it isn't actually him, I hope they never confirm it. I never want to hear a solid: "That wasn't Gregg, that was this other guy." Even if they never bring him back (noooo), I'd rather have a Schrodinger's Coulson than open the box and find out he's dead.

[identity profile] 1337nik.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 11:48 am (UTC)(link)
Schrodinger's Coulson, I love it

[identity profile] freyallster.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that you've named it that. XD

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, not me, I can't take credit. That's the mad Russian artist erebusodora (http://erebusodora.tumblr.com/) who coined that one. It's just so beautifully appropriate!

[identity profile] da-angel729.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I was having this exact same reaction!

[identity profile] hunterwithcause.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That's pretty much my headcanon as well. They needed a kick to get the team their shit together, so Fury (and Coulson, I like to think that that was always a kind of Plan B if the team didn't function) played it that way so that the Avengers would have something to avenge. Tony's little speech during his face-off with Loki ties nicely into that.

(It's bugging me that I can't remember what it was that Coulson said to Fury when he was 'dying'. Didn't he say something like that being his job? Or something? I just remember thinking that it was kind of a weird piece of dialogue, but maybe that's just the mangled German translation.)

[identity profile] kelincihutan.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember the exact line, but it was something along the lines of "This is a good thing. They need something to pull them together." So, even if he is dead (which I really hope he's not), he was giving Fury the green light to milk his death for all it was worth to get the Avengers to pull together.

At least...is this the same line you meant? I need to watch that scene again. And possibly the film around it as well. :D

[identity profile] hunterwithcause.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's the line I meant, yes. And that could still totally mean that Coulson's not dead. In a "It's a good thing Loki nearly killed me, LET'S MILK IT FOR ALL THAT IT'S WORTH!" kind of way. (I really, really don't want Coulson to be dead. I love the guy. I'm pretty sure that he's my second favourite character of the movie.)

I need to watch that scene again. And possibly the film around it as well. :D

This is what I've been saying since I left the cinema! I need this movie to come out on DVD already. :D

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's something like:
Fury: "Eyes on me."
Phil: "Sorry, boss, I'm clocked out here."
Fury: "Not an option."
Phil: "It's alright. We knew this wasn't going to work if they didn't have something to..."

The implied word that he apparently dies before saying (or, y'know, runs out of breath, because it's really hard to talk with a punctured lung) is "to avenge." Because, y'know, Avengers.

...which begs the question, why not just call it the Hero Initiative or something with less negative connotations?

[identity profile] ladyknightanka.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
This is also what I('d like to) believe. ;____;

[identity profile] penoftruthiness.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Your headcanon is like my headcanon. As in, we have the same opinion on the whole situation.
