I think a lot of anger comes from there being an interview where Whedon said Coulson would make it through the whole movie. So even if it wasn't his call, that was a bit of a fib.

I'm a little surprised, though. I mean, I desperately want Coulson back, and I was crushed when he died, but even I'll admit, that was the best thing to happen right then--Coulson had made himself expendable, story-wise. It wasn't a usual Joss shock-death. It made things personal, even for the audience. I think that's part of the reason people cheer when the Hulk smashes the crap out of Loki. On it's own, it's hilarious. After Phil...it's vindication.

This actually threw me for a bit in the theater. I actually expected Coulson to to die immediately after getting stabbed. No extra one-liner, no one shoots the gun, Thor flushed down the hellicarrier, BAM. But then he starts his "You can't win", and now I'm expecting his "Oh so that's what it does" to be his closing line. And then...

It was weirdly drawn out for me, for a Whedon-written death, so it kind of affected my hopes that he was totally not actually dead please don't be dead.
