Have you seen: A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Thor's Hammer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1uD5_ovwqg&feature=related) yet? That's probably a big part of it.

He's just this utterly unflappable everyman who faces down muggers, killer fire-robots, and insane trickster gods with the same polite calm and utter competence. (Okay, so he got stabbed by the latter, but he also managed to get in a hell of a shot.) There's just something really appealing about that. Plus, the movie did that bit where they established him as a fanboy.
