(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 03:31 am (UTC)(link)Well, then rec a story you like, author, and stop telling me what to like. It's my opinion and I have a right to it.
Though I must say, it seems unnecessarily cruel to delete your story just because someone said it was their favorite. I want to feel compassion for your neurotic insecurity, but your reaction just seems so inappropriately vengeful that I'm struggling with it.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 03:43 am (UTC)(link)OP, the flip-side to your self-doubt is a kind of arrogance in that you're saying that everybody who likes the fic you consider subpar has terrible taste. Try to think of it this way: if you post a story and somebody enjoys it, then the story has served a worthwhile purpose and deserves to continue to "live." Also, for many people the stories they love and want to re-read aren't exclusively the very best written stories. Sometimes a story that's objectively mediocre can hit home or get the reader's literal or metaphorical kinks just right. Who are you to tell a reader on what basis they should be judging your story?
If I recced a story and then it was promptly yanked from the internet I'd feel like I'd been smacked in the face.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 03:51 am (UTC)(link)I'm very sorry you see it that way.
Like I said, I love my readers and I really appreciate the feedback I get saying they love my stuff and I always make sure to thank them for it.
But the removal of my fic after seeing it on the rec list was a sort of blind panic reaction because I went a bit "HOLY SHIT" and freaked out because... I get uncomfortable even thinking I might have become a good writer and I don't know why and I hate feeling that way. I did actually sit back a few days after I deleted my fic and asked myself why I did that, and I don't actually really know why. It was just a... panic thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)I've noticed that on story finding communities often people ending up trying to find someone who has kept a copy of a story and ask it to be emailed to them, because authors do what you have and take fics down that people really like. I know it's their right to do so, but it seems a shame to do it when you say you like your readers and their feedback.
