I guess, I mean hate people who strive for intentional ignorance too, but that is no reason to hate them with such spite. Just ignore people like that. Believe it or not society is not perpetually in moral decline.

Honestly I can understand the hatred for Bieber much more, he comes across as somewhat moralising in interviews, so yeah.

I agree with everything you just mentioned, anon. I also want to add that I think it may be easier for others to view Nazis in a certain view because, well, look what the media and Hollywood has done to these figures. Take films, comic books, etc. and see how they perpetuate Nazis. Yes, they're still evil in most of these works but it feels like they come across as almost being cartoony evil, which makes it okay for some to view them in a sinister-yet-sexual way.

After all, let's use Indiana Jones as an example. Most of the series uses Nazis with one exception: the second one, Temple of Doom. Unfortunately, India and Hinduism were targeted by a lot of unfair stereotypes that were regarded as being so awful for its use that it was considered a racist film (which yes, I agree it is very racist). Hence why the rest of the Indiana Jones films are all Nazis. Why? Because with Nazis, there really is no gray terms. Mostly, they are just regarded as pure simplistic evil. They make great villains, especially in historical fiction because their very being is symbolic.

It's already been noted that there are way more than just superhero comics.

A lot of people have already better explain what American comics are like.

My best bet: pick a character and go just read about that character. It's best to have a knowledgable friend and a wiki nearby. Also OP, if you wanted to say what you were reading and if you had a character you're interested about. I think one of us can help with a read-list of issues.

Just remember that each writer tends to write the same character differently. How different varies from writer to writer. Just the nature of the beast (and this also gives leeway for fans to "not remember" that story arc *cough*Nightwing:BrothersinBlood*cough*).

Also the art can be confusing at first because of the colors and detail, but it's something that eventually you get used to.

Well, loving Nazis is not as bad as not talking about Black Widow, obviously.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-21 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Can I get a link to this fic? I always hear about it but I'm too lazy to actually search for it but now I'm getting curious.

By the title I assume its a Zutara fic. I prefer genfic too but I might as well look to see what all the fuss is about.

YES! I love her so much! I used to watch this show with my grandmother so whenever I watch she reminds of her.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-21 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
It would have been fun but apparently everything in fandomsecrets IS SRS BUSINESS

Preach!

People think it's higher because the LGBT community is actually overrepresented in the media

That's not the only reason. People also think it's higher because LGBT people tend to congregate in the big cities. Someone who lives in New York, for instance, may have the impression that a hell of a lot more than 3 out of 100 people are LGBT, because in their immediate circle, that number is much higher.

You had me giggling with the "quality fandoms" bit.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hahha... see now, you should have gone with bisexual, seeing as how all of them have established heterosexual love interests at this point.

You don't even have to go to the comics! (but here's a fun one anyway)

Fun fact... She-Rulk there is what happens when Betty Ross gets the gamma treatment.

This. Sometimes. Well, not really, but I tend to get sad when I look at TvTropes and there are no negative tropes in the YMMV tab of the page for a work I like. (This is why I like everything Whedon so much -- I love his stuff like burning for it's sheer levels of awesome and charm and emotional investment, but there is always SO much to rant and fume and gripe about).

Sometimes, however, I don't like critiquing, especially for really serious or realistic works that are supposed to be reflective of normal life. For high dramas (like crime dramas or anything else that involves over-the-top amounts of life-threatening shit going down) and fantasy/sci-fi/action/superhero/speculative fiction, though, I love it.

....Except no, from the start your topic was "hurrhurr let's guess which one is gay!" Which is. Very gross. In the real world, trying to guess if someone's gay or not and then telling people if you're right is considered outing them against their will, and it's a very serious matter. Your secret has a similar spirit to it.

Also lol you said something about no one taking you seriously. It's pretty hard to take you seriously when you 1. misuse statistics, 2. run around encouraging "guess the homosexual" games (albeit in a fictional setting but still), and 3. ignore the possibility of lesbians because you personally can't schlick to that. All in all this is gross fangirl behavior.

Jersey Shore always struck me as the dullest idea of a show ever. But Snooki looks rather adorable, cute-sexy. (No idea about her personality, I've only seen photographs)

I'm pretty sure this secret isn't srs bsns so..

(Anonymous) 2012-05-21 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. In my own head canon, Spock and Uhura date when they're younger (when STXI is set) but they break up by in good terms and remain friendly and flirty, and that's what we see in TOS. And if he got with Kirk, if would probably be around STV or STVI if at all...

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, there are many ways to leather-pants, by ignoring a character's flaws and presenting them as a character that actually bears no resemblance to the canon character, or by arguing that the character's actions are actually good (which is usually done by demonizing the good guys), or by arguing that he's just a poor misunderstood woobie.

Besides the cost, we Americans have no need to travel internationally. We're already the size of Europe. Plenty of variety already within our borders.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-21 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
that you think the op doesn't realize this makes me laugh.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
In fairness, he didn't realize how she felt about him till he felt her pulse, then she took off. This is his first time seeing her after he really could have even known what it was.

Also: "The password was too obvious"

Exactly. Maybe he thought that someone who was supposed to be as smart as her wouldn't be so stupid as to use such a simple, obvious password.

Nayrt

Can't speak for anyone else, but I only posted one of the comments. It guess it's possible that another anon was responsible for the rest of them though

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
No but it is stupid.

[identity profile] timbeon.livejournal.com 2012-05-21 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's artificial and overpriced, but so is most junk food and I love that anyway.

I never went to Disney World as a kid, and even though I'm an adult and planning on never having kids, I'd love to go to Disney World with my friends someday. I love amusement parks and it looks like fun.

Speaking from the perspective of a film-viewer:

Avengers
Tony: Bi, but prefers women
Steve: Possibly bi (hello Bucky!), but, coming from a very repressive era, prefers women
Thor: Straight (The Aesir may well have different notions of sexuality than we do, however)
Bruce: Straight
Natasha: Bi
Clint: Straight

SHIELD
Fury: Straight
Coulson: Straight (but may have a teensy crush on Captain America)
Hill: Straight

Labels don't seem to work for Loki (humans, Frost Giants, horses, etc.) so I'mma say omnisexual, as posited above.
