Really? That's strange. I see OMCs and OFCs all the time in my fandom. And OCs usually only appear if the gender isn't that easy to define, or there are more than one. I'm pretty much fandom monogamous, though, so I have no idea about the conventions in other fandoms.

Whether I put the gender of original characters depends on whether or not they're going to be romantically and/or sexually involved with a canon character. If they are, I will put the gender, that way people know if the pairing is het or slash. But If they're just in the background doing general stuff, I don't put the gender because... well, why does it matter?

If they're just in the background it really doesn't matter, but as someone who loves outsider!POV stories (most of them gen) I like knowing upfront if I'm going to get a female or a male perspective. (Never mind that I'm going to read it either way...)
