Yeah, they're not supposed to be explicitly Chinese. Pretty much period. They're intended to be anonymous and scary. In the book they aren't even explicitly Asian.

Seeing as the film changed certain things from the book - like the necessary evil of choosing an ethnicity for the invaders - it is necessary to discuss the film in the context of the books and what was changed and why. Especially if you're going to call it "shitty" for things that aren't actually mentioned in the film.
