I totally agree with you. I've seen some gory things in manga and internet stuff, but I think the most terrifying thing about that was that you knew this wasn't just something out of someone's imagination. This is straight out of someone's memories and that kind of horror wasn't just in cartoons, but it happened to so many real people.
I absolutely love the anime and have serious respect for the creator and the people who helped create that because they took that event and I think really captured the feelings around it without turning it into something cheap.
