Has anyone else read Night Watch by Terry Pratchett?

Yes, I read it when it came out. I honestly wondered if something terrible had happened to him, because it was such a shift in tone and improvement in quality from the run of books before it.

I'd been getting sick of "Magical thing causes leaks through from our world. Riff on what it would be like for Ankh Morpork to go through basic discovery of idea from our world. Wizards concerned. Peaks, disaster averted, world continues." And then I read... Night Watch. Wow. And the whole run after it, too.

In retrospect, I kind of wonder if he'd had his diagnosis.

"People on the side of The People always ended up dissapointed, in any case. They found that The People tended not to be grateful or appreciative or forward-thinking or obedient. The People tended to be small-minded and conservative and not very clever and were even distrustful of cleverness. And so the children of the revolution were faced with the age-old problem: it wasn't that you had the wrong kind of government, which was obvious, but that you had the wrong kind of people.

As soon as you saw people as things to be measured, they didn't measure up."

Easily one of my favorite Pratchett books ever!

Do y'all think people who hadn't read any previous Discworld books would be impressed enough by Night Watch? I always want to recommend it, but then I back off, thinking it wouldn't be the same without having read the other books about the Night Watch.

I'm lucky because when I was on facebook last night and an Australia friend posted a lament about forgetting to wear a lavender sprig, or else I would have forgotten as well.

One of the best-written and my most personal favourite books ever. EVER. Also one of the very best Diskworld books.

It ought to be required reading in school. It is amazing. LOVELOVELOVE.

Lately I am addicted to crossovers. So tell me, people of F!S, what's the best crossover fic you've read recently?

For me it's a tie between these two:

[identity profile] kelincihutan.livejournal.com 2012-05-25 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, crossovers! My favorite. I will gank two off my rec list on my fic-blog. They're both pretty long (over 25K in both cases, IIRC), but that's part of the draw, I feel. :)

Detective Comics/White Collar
Confidence Lost (http://archiveofourown.org/works/217666)
Author: C.R. Scott
Major Characters: Neal Caffrey, Peter Burke, Dick Grayson, Bruce Wayne, Damian Wayne, Ra's al Ghul
Summary: Everything about Neal Caffrey’s past prior to his 18th birthday is a mystery, even to him. However, when someone unexpectedly recognizes him by a name that he has never used as an alias before, he learns that the biggest con of his life is literally his life.
What's Awesome About It: Peter Burke, Batman, Ras al Ghul, Neal Caffery, Tim Drake. All in one story. What's not to love?

Highlander: the Series/Lord of the Rings
ROG On Vacation (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/803615/1/ROG_on_Vacation)
Author: dhrachth
Major Characters: Methos, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Arwen
Summary: Methos accidentally goes to Middle Earth.
What's Awesome About It: I know what you're thinking, but this is one of the LotR fics that really respects the lore. Instead of Sueing it up, Methos helps Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli (very much in-character Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli) solve a mystery. A really interesting mystery. Also, being Methos, he makes beer.

I really liked this NCIS/SGA crossover I read awhile ago. Ziva goes to Atlantis. Probably only works if you love Ziva (she's my favorite) and SGA (most of the story takes place there). Title: Agent Afloat Atlantis, http://www.wraithbait.com/viewstory.php?sid=14047

I got three, in all fairness though, one is so much "recently" as it is "frequently read".

Top Gear/Pokemon in "And make it Double: In which Richard falls down a hole, James finds a fish, and Jeremy makes a child cry.
http://rionaleonhart.livejournal.com/68914.html?thread=1329458#cutid1

And "Dungeon Keeper Ami" by Pusakuronu: Where Ami from Sailor Moon falls down a wibbly-wobbly space-time thing and ends up becoming a Dungeon Keeper.
http://addventure.bast-enterprises.de/frecent.php?tag=Dungeon+Keeper+Ami

Finally, "Ranma and The Doctor" by Turbanator: In which the Doctor goes to Nerima instead of London after Rose gets stuck in Pete's Universe and his new companion is Ranma Saotome. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3388913/1/Ranma_and_The_Doctor

I bought the first two omnibus manga volumes of Skip*Beat, then went on a mad search all over the city trying to read the rest of the series without buying it. Ultimately I ended up getting all the way to Volume 27 by going to three different libraries and buying Volume 17 because it was checked out and I was super impatient.

Does anyone know any living communities for this series (LJ, Tumblr, whatever)? I can barely find good icons for it.

honest question, f!s - what bra size am I? I've never found a bra that fits in my entire adult life. all the measurement charts out there give me a negative, or put me in a size that doesn't fit when I actually try it on. either the cups fit but the band is suffocatingly tight, or the band fits and the cups are way too huge. there's never any middle ground.

my measurements:

overbust: 35"
bust: 34"
underbust: 33"

God this comment system. No offense, but I don't come here for animal pics, and I hate that I can't avoid them now without avoiding a whole general thread. Will we really be revisiting moving and mirroring over here if things don't change?
