It's not fearing change, it's hating being forced to scroll through a ton of expanded comments that I've already seen just to see if one of the new ones is the beginning of a new thread I might care about, a reply to something I'm following or merely a "+1!" to something else.

cross out facebook and write in livejournal and this is exactly how your argument goes

You've been confronted with something new and are desperately nitpicking it so you can justify your change-aversion reaction. Its natural, but you'll get over it. The only real difference is you can see at the start of a thread whether there is a new post, rather than having to scroll down and down and down and down and down and ...etc. to see if a comment is marked as new and click to expand it to see if it is a +1 as used to be. This is an amazing time saver as it lets you skip over entire dormant threads instead of scrolling and scrolling and scrolling and scrolling and scrolling and scrolling and... just to see fi somethning is new. You want to go back to something that requires more work, just because you've been confronted with something new.

Or

tl;dr
Haters gotta hate

No, and you need only look at this very thread to see why this is new layout takes more work. If I come to this page, before clicking anything else, what I see is that the "general comments" thread has a tree about Terry Pratchett, which goes for a few unexpanded comments and then is truncated with "and 14 more." Then there's a new comment unexpanded comment tree started by an anon that goes for a few comments and is truncated (and if this is how it worked throughout, that would be a change I could get behind).

But then, here comes the problem. Because after that we get one "And 50 more comments" for the "General comments" thread. I can't just expand that and see "Oh, here's a truncated thread of animal pictures I don't give a shit about and can quickly scroll by, here's some other thread with some new truncated comments I can skip, oh, here's a jackass replying to me, let's see what he said!" No, instead, once again, I've got to go "Big blue name/time stamp, baby squirrell, dogs, spider, big blue time stamp, comment, big blue time stamp, comment, big blue time stamp..., big blue time stamp.., big blue time stamp..." EVERY FUCKING TIME.

That is not faster. It is not efficient. It is not a good change. But by all means, continue to make yourself look like a jackass.
