Pfft, South Park and Family Guy are brilliant.

Or, failing that, really fucking funny.

Ah, I've never had that happen to me. I completely see why that would irritate people.

And you're right, most people don't bother you. But there will always be the one or two that manages to piss everyone off.

Sadly true in any situation. ;)

XDD They are. But the vulgarity sometimes bothers me.

But hey, that's just me.

But that's what makes Matt secretly the smartest character in the series -- he has a nickname that no one will ever even guess is a nickname!

It's better animation than the majority of anime. Not so much the motion capture, but in that whole cels don't sit still for long periods of time while characters speak. If there's one thing American animation is great at, it's never being stagnant.

The real question is, what kind of Japanese mother would name their kid Light in English? All the other names in the family are perfectly normal, but NO! Let's name our first-born son after an English NOUN!

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a big proponent for the de-tabooing of vulgarity in comedy, so I find it lovely. The comedic value of vulgarity is greatly underappreciated, IMO.

Different strokes for different folks.

...Wow, surprised you haven't gotten your ass kicked verbally for this yet.

But you're wrong. XP Every art form has its share of crap, be it anime or American animation or stick figure art or comics. Crap is not genre-exclusive.

I don't have a problem with it, personally, though. Definitely not one of those people who like...protests against it or anything. XP I just don't watch it, is all.

And yes, very true. XD; A lot of people really don't get that concept.

1. it's not so sad when your fannish friends are smarter than your rl friends -- and less boring. sometimes, you have to go where the fun is, even if that's just online.

14. i agree. it's the kou klan all over again, only with less wank (hint: the wank made them interesting).

16. luckily, i have an excuse. so! who's that? and where can i find 'em?

I meant to say that people should glance at some of their fellow blogger's journals to see if they'd be interested in friending them. Sorry that I was unclear. ^_^;

ditto. to the point where i have to screen my calls. don't people know how to take a hint anymore?

I wish I had your optimism. Alas, everyone I grew up with is either a loser or religious (i.e. either way I'm screwed). Glad you managed to dodge that bullet. :-)

Any ideas for someone who's pretty much alienated from her peers?

The girl who grew up on Ghibli-style anime and Euro!animation waves hello and blows you a great big sloppy kiss. (I miss Germany, dammit.)

Re: 1

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I promise you, you're talking to someone who was in the same boat. I grew up in rural Tennessee, buckle of the bible belt, and I was an incredibly outspoken liberal. I thought everyone hated me, and to an extent quite a few did, but there are always kindred spirits if you're not completely on the fringe yourself.

It really wasn't until my last year of high school that I discovered Cookeville's not just a bunch of rednecks and bible-thumpers---there are a lot of truly GOOD PEOPLE HERE.

I think a big part of people's problems, beyond all that, is that they think they need to find peers with completely similar interests. None of my friends are in fandom, and it IS a thing I have to conceal with certain people, but honestly? That is life. I love my friends and would do anything for them, but no relationship is perfect.

[identity profile] luisa-f.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Everybody is busy reading the 'leaked' copies of DH, this is the perfect time to say anything you want to. :P

I'm... kind of fringey. I do have a few offline friends, just none from my own graduating class -- long story short, they freaked out when the depression hit and never quite recovered from, uh, my mental illness. They also didn't like the whole bisexual Pagan academic schtick, and I wasn't willing to stay closeted. No big loss there; if they're only going to dislike who I really am, why bother putting on a show?

I guess I'm missing "my" bookstore fairly intensely, as it was my biggest source of non-internet interaction. There was one on Main Street, only it was just forced to close, so no more writerly gatherings for young and old. I ought to email a few of the others, see if they want to meet somewhere else. There were some under the age of forty! Really! ;-)

[identity profile] levikitty.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
18. Anything I say about the statement will just be a repeat of what everyone else has said, so all I can say is:

...no Xiaolin Showdown? That's the only cartoon besides Animaniacs that I'd buy boxed DVD sets for. (Already have the Animaniacs ones)

Avatar has some of the most amusing and awesome fight scenes ever. That's the number one reason I watch it.

21. It's a ridiculous name whether it's Light or Raito. EVERYONE KNOWS IT'S STUPID. Even Misa commented on what an odd name it was, and she's well, Misa. This is what, the third secret mentioning his name? LET'S MOVE ON NOW. Can we at least make fun of a different character's name at least? D:

Re: 1

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's not fringe, not really. By fringe, I mean if you're an open fursuiter into scat porn, you may have difficulty finding kindred spirits.

Unless you're living in a town where you literally do know EVERYONE, there is someone nearby you can find if you look hard enough. College campus and college groups are BY FAR the best starting points, but there are other ways, too.

[identity profile] lovefromgirl.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
*snerk* Nope, I'm not the troll from poor_skills the other day. I promise. ;-) I do live in one of those areas (it's more of a three-town amalgamation), and I've been at a community college where, no shit, I can count the number of non-professors I befriended on one hand. Maybe living away this fall will be good for my social skills (or lack thereof).

Thanks for listening to the blather. I never know where to turn for help on these things, so I end up gravitating to threads like this.

7. I have to know what animation this image is from. It's GORGEOUS.

17. nothing related; I just wish more anime had character designs as good as E7 :B

[identity profile] twiddledee.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
You're either missing the point or doing this because you can. I'll just pretend that you're a troll. :P

Re: 1

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2007-07-17 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Where are you going? Location change like that can DEFINITELY help, as long as you're not too scared to try. Which can indeed be scary.

Here's a good secret to building friendships, though: Don't be ashamed of hiding some parts of yourself. If you find someone who truly respects you, they're much more likely to respect anything else you choose to divulge (though there is always a risk). Even in fandom, that's how things work, just on a different level. :)

Not going far away at all -- forty-five minutes, from one rural edge of the city to the other. The Yoda to my Luke will be within hollering distance, which is nice.

*writes down advice* Hold... something... back. Right! Got it.
