I'm just speculating here, of course, OP, but considering that there aren't many--if any?--openly gay players in the NHL, out of approximately 700 or so players in total, they may not be straight, they may be closeted.

Just saying, from those pics you chose I see nothing out of the ordinary or super secretly gay in them. So...you might want to count yourself as one of those delusional fans you talk about.

Well what did you expect to see? Guys clutching each other's scrotum and sticking hockey sticks up their buttholes? Hardcore making out?

Something more than incidental placement of skates, talking to each other, and congratulatory hugging? I mean, there's not even anything special about their facial expressions as they look at each other. Just...absolutely nothing special in these pictures.

That bottom left picture got me too though, holy mack.

The only reason I know about this pairing is because I occasionally stalk thehoyden's pinboard (https://pinboard.in/u:thehoyden), which happens to be basically regularly bookmarking recs for it these days.

players are one of the reasons of why I don't buy the supposed subtext in slash fiction when people propose it as a fact and not fun speculation
because in real life there are many friends that actually have "homoerotic subtext" (and way more than those fictional characters that people ship so much) and yet they're just friends
guys are like that especially when they are in a team, sport tend to create the biggest friendships between people including guys, friends are comfortable in each other presence they spend so much time together ... but people that never acted like that with their friends will never understand and of course they'll see something more
which isn't to say that sometimes there isn't

Homoeroticism is actually quite common in very masculine institutions, like the military or sports. It's all about creating strong bonds, which fuel success. I mean the biggest motivation is not to let your teammates down after all. It's not surprising you see the subtext, but it doesn't necessary mean that they're gay.
