It's been a while since I've seen it, but it's something along the lines of "I've never had as good friends later on in life as those I had when I was 12. Does anybody?" Or words to that effect.

Wow, really? That's like, the opposite of my experience. OP must have had uncommonly nice childhood friends.

I'm not sure it's that the friends in the movie are that nice, exactly. I always thought the last line was more a commentary about childhood as a whole, and how the friendships you had in childhood are very different than the friendships you make as an adult. Not better necessarily, but... unique.

Haha, I totally over-analyzed that, but I love this movie, too.

Oh, the original line wasn't "good friends", just "friends". I never saw the movie, so took the posters word for it. Google is my friend...

Still, the secret makes me think the OP has better memories of childhood friendships than I do.

I think the last line is lovely as it's a voiceover and I think Richard Dreyfuss? Gosh so long ago now I can't remember. It's a lovely film. Stephen King's stories often translate really well to the screen.

I read the story years after I first watched the movie, and I dearly love them both. In fact I think is one of my favorite movies of all time. Besides: River Phonix!! =)

Stand By Me secret for the win!

Yeah, it's true. You make another kind of friends when you're older, but it's not the same as childhood friends, when you're idealistic and throw yourself into it like it's forever.
Also you don't have as much time to spend with friends, while usually your childhood friends are classmates, so you spend class time with them + playtime... That's a lot of time to share adventures with.
