...you haven't seen any of the origin stories for any of the Avengers? Why on Earth were you interested in the Avengers then? The trailer wasn't that good.

Well, I was going to say that I'm a comics fan, but then I realised that I haven't yet that much Avengers, either. :P But I'm a huge fan of Young Avengers (where Ironman and Captain America appear as well). Reading them lead me to Civil War and of course there's Avengers: Children's Crusade which is all about the Young Avengers and the Avengers working at cross purposes until they aren't. So I did have at least some background knowledge before I went in, though I still missed some movie!verse specifics things. (For example, I didn't quite recognise how quietly BAMF Coulson was until way too late.)

I wanted to see the origin stories as well, but my friends aren't interested in superheroes at all, and I didn't want to go alone. It's more or less luck that I found a friend who was at least indifferent to the genre to go and watch Avengers with me. Ironically she ended up really liking it and we're talking about having a superhero movie night where we marathon the other Marvel movies. (Which is another reason why I haven't watched Thor yet. ;))

there are a LOT of people who saw Avengers first and then went back and watched the others. Once word of mouth got out that it was the movie of the moment, people who normally wouldn't have gone decided to give it a try and were pleasantly surprised.

Because it had Joss Whedon? Because the trailer looked good? Because it had great reviews? Because it was there?

Seeing this movie is one of the highest grossing movies of all time, I think it's obvious a fuckton of people went to see it who didn't see the origin stories. But going on the torrent sites, a lot of people are going back and discovering them, and I'm betting DVD sales & rentals have gone through the roof too.
