*snort* I'm not against a hammer joke or two. But seriously, I feel like "oh he's a woobie and fandom just loves that" is really reductive. I'm sure different fans like him for different reasons, but one of them is definitely how much of an outsider he is because, to be a hypocrite, fandom loves a good outsider. I feel like a lot of us see ourselves that way, and sometimes it results in us identifying with the Doctor and Abed Nadir and Sherlock Holmes, and sometimes it comes out as sympathizing with Loki when he feels left out and unappreciated.

But a lot of the fandom is like that. There are very few of the movie!Loki fans who see him as a villain who basically caused all his own problems. So many of them think that his made up slights really exist and that Odin didn't really treat him as a son and that Thor somehow wasn't a good enough brother.

I'm with you. I like Loki for who he is. He's an interesting villain who has layers, but he's still a villain. I'm just sick of all the "not really evil" or "just one step away from redemption, and he totally wants to be redeemed" comments. He can be redeemed in the same way anyone can be redeemed, but it will take a heck of a lot of work, and he has to want it and admit that he really does have a family (who is his real family because adopted families are real) who love him.

I may have been unclear: my point was that while there are definitely people who see Loki as a woobie/think he was justified/believe he just needs a hug, I think it's not just because Tom Hiddleston is attractive or they need someone new to put in leather pants or whatever. I think the reason he gets woobified is, at least partly, because the people who see him that way have experienced similar feelings, of being the dorky, thinking person in a crowd of people who are not and don't appreciate that you are. So I get this woobification more than I do that of certain other villains, and it doesn't bug me as much.

I mean I still think they should be looking at the broader picture (he's done some super bad things, and I really don't buy the "oh but the aliens mind controlled him into it" excuse that I've seen floating around), but eh, I'm really not one to judge.

Couldn't it be both true that he did feel like he was treated as the outsider, and not quite good enough because of who he was, and still made up a hell of a lot of his slights? I think it's more interesting if he was considered never quite good enough by the court, but still his own neurotic worst enemy?

It is an interesting idea, but I don't see any support for it in movie canon. In the movie, Odin clearly loves both his sons equally. He clearly sees Loki as just as much his son and loves him. If anything, he's harder on Thor as the older son. There is no evidence whatsoever that people didn't trust him (and no one but Odin knew his parentage to know he was a frost giant).

If you want to write your fics that way, fine, but at least label it AU. Because it isn't canon.

yeah i don't get the people who think odin is a bad father either. the only shitty thing he did to loki was the convenient odinsleep during loki's jotun freakout, but that's not really something he can control and he'd clearly been gearing up for one since the beginning of the film, lol. i love me some loki but people gotta find an alternative to dragging odin through the mud.

Well, the whole "surprise, you're a secretly adopted member of a species that are our hereditary enemies" thing was badly handled and predictably likely to turn into a mess.

We didn't actually see much of Odin's parenting technique, but look at the results. Thor was an arrogant, hot-headed idiot until he got hit with the humility stick, and Loki is a total disaster of a person. I'm sure Loki is totally exagerating or interpreting a lot of stuff in the worst possible light, but "kind of quietly disfunctional" "seems to me like a more plausible starting point for what happened in Thor than "everything was puppies and rainbows until Loki went off the deep end." It's more of a difference of interpretation than willfully ignoring canon. Except for the fic that has everyone wildly out of character, which is, admittedly, a lot of it.

That's what I thought, tbh. Small slights always seem bigger when you have self-esteem issues.
