(Anonymous) 2012-06-01 01:29 am (UTC)(link)Aw man, I remember that whole thing with Snape. I used to ironically call myself a Snapewife, just to see other people's reactions. That was fun. But the Harry Potter fandom was always fun when it came to wank.
Anyway, maybe I'm a little obsessive, but definitely not on the astral-love-plane. Obsession is a part of my personality. I'm either obsessed with something or utterly uninterested. But I wouldn't say I'm so much obsessed with Loki/fandom as say that I'm obsessed with character study and lit.
And then there's:
I kind of love Loki too, but not, like, astral plane marrying kind of love. More like the "he was always the most interesting thing about Norse mythology" childhood crush evolving into "woah, hot, twisted dude with daddy issues" adulthood lust.
which I find as creepy as astral-love-plane level crush. I'm asexual, and the culture I was raised in makes me think that way, so different shades for different people. It's less creepy to me to be in love with a character than to lust over them. So just ... you know, different views.
Woah, tl; dr, sorry.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-01 02:07 am (UTC)(link)I guess lust is kind of a strong word, and probably the completely the wrong word, for my feelings. But, tbh, I was in the middle of reading Tony/Loki fic when I wrote that comment so "lust" was the word at the forefront of my mind. I get a little involved in my fic reading, I guess. Maybe "slight infatuation" would be better. Really, I just like the character a lot, and I always have. Just not enough to do serious character studies. Maybe mythology crash courses on Wikipedia. My type of "character studies" are lots and lots of shipping fic, and that's, a lot of the time, the farthest thing from a character study you can get. Though, I hadn't really thought about Loki in any incarnation for a while until the fangirls started going crazy for The Avengers.
Kind of OT, but, I'm curious: How did the culture you were raised in influence your asexuality? If you care to share, what culture was it?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-01 02:19 am (UTC)(link)Ah, okay. I mean for me, even if I don't like a character, I'd be interested in writing a character study. I guess it's kinda like people studying psychology on their friends, except I prefer fictional characters. Less of an invasion of privacy, right?
Oh, I hope I can do it justice. You know how in Japan they have that whole 'meeting my true love' kind of thing along with 'stalking = love' and 'watching from afar = romantic'? The culture I was raised in has a low-key standard of that. Love is very important, and sex is absolutely looked down upon. People who have a crush are expected to have ideals of love in a more far-sighted venture (basically, they're supposed to already be thinking of what kind of wedding they want), and sex is a taboo. Nobody talks about sex, nobody thinks about sex, nobody wants sex. People who have sex outside of marriage are looked down upon. You're supposed to save everything you have for the one person you're going to marry. I'm looked down upon for talking freely about sex.
When I said that the culture I was raised in makes me think that way, I was referring to the fact that to me, lust is creepier than astral-plane-love. For example, K-pop is a big thing over here, and people are always talking about the celebrity they're dying to meet and marry.
I hope that made sense :|

Anyway, yeah, that makes sense. But now, I'm even more curious about what country/culture you are from because I find the concept of love/marriage with a taboo on sex very interesting in an academic way (and a little frightening, no offense intended). I'm certainly very ignorant regarding other cultures. I'd say my experience is a bit opposite. Love/sex is stressed and marriage, while not taboo, isn't such a big deal. (That's partially just in my little corner in the world and partially reflects the views of my country/culture, though many people like to pretend that that isn't the case.) No further revelation is requested on your part, however. Unless you care to share further.
Thanks for sharing what you have, OP. :)
